My province, my city, my ethnic group.
Once upon a time about 300 years ago, a colossus named Malobe; a tax collector spread fear in markets, especially in ‘Duala’ clans.
So, Duala chiefs decided to unite in order to put an end to this terror. This assembly was named ‘Ngondo’ (meaning umbilical cord).
The Ngondo brings together people of the Wouri, Nkam, Moungo, Sanaga maritime and some clans of the South West region of Cameroon. The event is meant to unite and restore peace in the Sawa community.
The event is commemorated on the first Sunday of every December. It consists of a ritual ceremony “the water rite” intended to seek the protection of water gods (Jengu).
Today, the Ngondo has become more festive with canoe races, election of miss Ngondo, culinary competition etc …
